Everybody has a list. And with the blogs and internet, all these fucking lists are starting to look the same. The difference is, they have no idea what they fuck they are talking about. You can't start listening to hip hop in 2009 and think you know who is who and what is what in 2011.

I am not saying this list is perfect, but I think its the most complete list you are gonna find on this. Muthafucka I put 100 songs in a row. While I work on some final details, I figured the list was complete enough to share. I present the Top 100 Hip Hop and Rap Songs of 2011.

100. Uzoy - Confident feat. Che Grand -
Because the voice and flow are dope. And the chemistry is similar to Jay and Foxy on "Ain't No Nigga", except, you know, less coke talk.

99. Jay Z and Kanye West - Primetime -
Because Hov's verse was almost decent enough to fit a Life and Times album and Kanye's line about soaking in a bubblebath was the silliest shit ever.

98. Kidd Kidd - Better Walk feat 50 Cent -
Because the flow is familiar but the style is all original.

97. LA the Darkman - They Keep Talking - A
philliates Street Shit. Embassy Entertainment. Need I say more?

96. Bambu - Troy Davis Freestyle -
Because you either build or destroy. Some destroy. Bambu builds.

95. Mod Sun - Tye Dye Everything feat. Schoolboy Q -
Because the beat doesn't lack and Schoolboy Q closes like David Freese.

94. Tony Yayo - Ballin feat. French Montana -
Because Tony doesn't need much to get stupid. With French in tow, this shit had me doing the Yayo dance for first time in years

93. Rittz - Geronimo -
Because Rittz is deep. And this shit is 12 stories deep. Get laced up. Sniff.

92. Addlib - Ups and Downs -
Because L.L. Cool J ain't dropping shit this year and no matter what people say about Drake's sync with women's moods and emotions, this was the one that my ladies need to hear.

91. All Star(lito)- Felt Like Giving Up -
Because this is a trap beat. And he made it more than that. Shouts to Lil Lodi.

90. The Game - Red Nation feat. Lil Wayne -
Because this shit had me waiting on the Crip response for weeks.

89. DJ Quik - Killer Dope -
Because Quik is the Gist nigga alive. And he don't pay for no piano players.

88. Tunk - In Da Trunk feat ADd+ -
Because this shit blends better than Kush and coffee. And some.

87. Kris Bills- City of Win feat. Sir Michael Rocks and Naledge -
Sir Michael Rocks flow was made for this beat. And even if you never been to Chicago, you can cruise to this shit. Payday music.

86. Boogz Boogetz - Supreme Flow feat. Prodigy -
Because this shit is a club banger on the low. Definitely fucked up the speakers in my jeep.

85. E-40 - My Little Grimey Nigga feat. Stressmatic -
40 Fonzarelli talking about some shit we can all relate to. That grimey little nigga.

84. Boldy James - I Sold Dope All My Life - Because you can picture this nigga selling candy for like two weeks in kindergarten before he found out about CRACK.

83. Slim The Mobster - Who's House feat.. Kendrick Lamar-
Because the piano intro set that shit up nice. I wonder if Dr. Dre bumps this shit around the crib.

82. Killa Kyleon - Bodies Hit the Floor feat. Bun B -
Killa Kyleon. Bun B. Because Houston got it in on this one something major. And the video was quite viral, but you ain't know that tho.

81. Davinci - Smoke the Night Away feat. Rae Rosero -
Because the beat and the flow was like summertime's finest. And I was looking for the remix for weeks (no Snoop connects?)

80. Danny Brown - 30 -
Because I had to listen to this shit like 2 times to feel it and then I was a disciple. Guess its because I am knocking on 30 myself.

79. Jackie Chain - Don't Violate feat. Gangsta Boo -
Because the flow was dope and he was on some straight 2000 MemphTown shit.

78. Maino -- Let It Fly Remix Feat Roscoe Dash, Dj Khaled, Ace Hood, Meek Mill, Jim Jones & Wale -
Because radio needs radio hits. What you think all the guns is for? And Wale and Maino did tie them ends tight like a shoestrings.

77. First Class Fresh - First Class Back -
Because I could really see me and my crew making this shit and throwing up on the city when we all get together.

76. Lupe Fiasco - Lightwork fat. Ellie Goulding and Bassnectar -
Because its so much weird shit happening, it works in a way.

75. Childish Gambino - Heartbeat -
Because the DJ gave a shout to nerds on one of the early leaks and I wanted to deny that I felt this nerd rap. But Gambino spit, so fuck it til you love it.

74. Ludacris - Rich and Flexin feat. Waka Flaka -
If Luda was a new rapper, he'd probably make the XXL Freshman class. If he was an old school rapper, we'd be bowing down. He's not quite in his prime, but this song is from that catalog, when he was at his hottest. Enjoy! (but is Waka always tatted like a Mexican or what.)

73. Slick Rick - I Need Some Bad
Slick Rick and DJ Premier. Wait, good Rick Ruler and dope Premier. No throwaways here.

72. OK N-Dex - Crazy Cash feat. CO2 Da Great -
On the highway.... Because Oklahoma got hits.

Because this shit is just as dope as it is conscious as it sexist as it is the best example of what this group is bringing to the western market.

70. Joell Ortiz - Body Down feat. Novel
Because Joell's verses mixed with Novel's voice and that guitar are enough to make you pour from your eyes. Soul by the pound.

69. Young Gifts (of F.O.C.) - Fuck The Law -
Young Gs in my book. Fear not, the streets are not out to get you. Fuck the law. Shitty attitudes over a beat thats the shit!

68. Wall Street - After The Smoke
What did you expect to hear after those first 8 bars? Exactly. There is no telling what this spaced out beat is going. This is dope enough for that alone.

67. Kid Sister - Luuk Out Girl feat. Flosstradamus
Work out. Footwork. Big and bad. Damn I heart Melissa. If I would have lived with my pops in high school, I am sure, I would have smashed. I need to see how much it cost to book her. Dope raps. Flyest femme in the game.

66. StepBrothers (Don Trip and All Star(lito) - Karate In the Garage Because these niggas probably smoked some chevies or they got the real good dro. I was like, "aye, are they really brothers". Synergy on the track.

Because the clubs need something to get paid with. And this is one of them shits that get people running to the bar. DJs take heed and you might stay employed.

64. Future - Magic
Another one of them club joints, who knew future could do it so easy. Oh yeah, ATL ho.

63. Chip Tha Ripper - Me Too feat. Like of Pac Div
Not too many "conscious" songs came out this year early. This was one of the few dope ones.

62. Daily Bread (Hassan Mackey and Apollo Brown) - Tell Me -
Detroit got them soul records lying around in the ghetto and thrift stores I bet. This shit sound like what Mobb Deep should've sounded like when they was going through that transition period. Dope.

61. ADd+ - Under feat. Dustin Cavazos
Best Video of the year. Dustin leads out with the lisp you love to hate. And ADd+ prove why they are this year's hip hop darlings.

60. Wale - Bait -
BAIT BAIT BAIT BAIT. Because Bait is the new slang. Dig it.

59. French Montana - Choppa Down feat. Waka Flaka
French and Waka going dumb. French make them hits here and there now huh.

58. Cappadonna - Can't Believe It's Him -
Just a dope as song. Straight mixtape action. Gotta put it on there twice tho.

57. Shye - Say Hello feat. King Louie, Big Homie D.O.E., Rockie Fresh & Shorty-K
Because it doesn't need to be complete to be worth it. Did King Louie make a nigga rewind this shit 10 times. Gotdam!

56. G-Side - Came Up feat. Slash -
Because two black guys walk into a bar with a violin. And then....

55. Young Jeezy - I Do (RMX) feat. Andre 3000 and Jay Z
Names alone made it a hit. The actual verses made it a standout. The funny shit that happen when Dre decides he wants to rap. Why does he only rap about love songs? I Do. Marriage. I guess. Play it again, Sam.

54. Wale - Chain Music feat. Rick Ross
Because the world don't care about nothing but shine, so fuck it, get your shine on.

53. Wale - Tats All on My Arm feat. Rick Ross
Back to back Wale. Do you know how hard it was to pick this one over Chain Music. Two totally different songs about the same nothingness. But Ross killed it with the Wale twist on his chorus parts. The Wale kid think he be on it and he might be right.

52. King Louie - Too Cool
This is like some of that early Jay Z shit that niggas was bumping while they was sipping champagne and counting money in the early mornings after hours when nightclubs closed in cities far away from the place they left their loves for the love of money, while they got a naked bitch rolling up.

51. Ludacris - I'm On Fire feat. Big Krit
Ludacris doesn't suck. Big Krit is still an MVP candidate for the year. This is one of the reasons why.

50. Lloyd Banks - Make It Stack feat. ASAP Rocky
I am a Banks fan and after Start It Up, I was looking for that next club banger type shit. I thought he was gonna do three in a row and then he went on another route with this one. Gone head switch the style up. Dope.

49. Schooboy Q - Druggies with Hoes feat. Ab Soul
That beat is sick as shit. But this is that shit that I need to play while I'm fucking around at the crib. Big booty bitches love it tho.

48. Trouble - Bussin
I hated that I liked this song so much. But then next you thing you know, I'm bussin for Trouble.

47. Killer Mike - Ric Flair
Ric Flair on the intor. With a baby woo! It don't take much to get me going, but then Mike hit that shit with the organ or whatever that fucking thing is. Mike is the king of ATL right now. Respect that camp.

46. Skizzy Mars - Tara
Gwen Stefani on a rap beat and she finally doesn't ruin it :) On the real, check Skizzy and keep an eye out..This is one of his more straight shooter records, but it worked so well. Damn good.

45. Lil Wayne - She Will feat. Drake -
I hate this song. But I can't deny the dopeness.

44. Nikki Minaj - Superbass -
I hate this song. But I can't deny the dopeness.

43. Future - Tony Montana -
I hate this song. But I can't deny the dopeness.

42. Pete Rock - Roses feat. Smif N Wessun and Freeway -
Allah, Allah, Allah. All praises due. Philly to BK. I dug it.

41. Shabazz Palaces - Swerve...
If you move on em... I missed the show this year at Granada. Fuck a Watch The Throne tour. My year was downhill ever since.

40. Blackstar - You Already Know -
It didn't have to be a tribute to Aretha to be great. In tribute, this song does justice.

39. Asaad - Dirty Black Leathers -
Dope shit. Who the fuck is Asaad and why hasn't he emailed me more music (onerevolutionent@gmail.com. Thanks in advance).

38. Raekwon - Molasses feat. Ghostface Killah and Rick Ross -
It kind of works a little too well. Dare I say I want to see this combo again.

37. Kreayshawn - Gucci Gucci -
The song is dope. If I didn't know she was a white girl with a bad sense of race relations, I would have bumped it more, I admit this.

36. Big Sean - Ass
Hammertime? When pizza's in a bagel you get hammer any time. Now make that muthafucking booty drop? (or is pop? hot?)

35. Killer Mike - Burn
Did Killer Mike just break down racism like 4:50? I think so. I will burn this mutha-fucka-down.

34. Currensy - She Don't Want A Man
Jezebel style Outkast shit. If a nigga sound anywhere like Kast, you already got me open and then Spitta dropped it for them real niggarettes who be on they own shit so bad they just got a fuck buddy or two to keep them straight,

33. Currensy - Scottie Pippen feat. Freddie Gibbs
"You bring your dro and I'll bring mine" is probably how the phone call before the studio ended. The ode to Scottie Pippen is the perfect metaphor to the assist job. Both rappers compliment each other so well, you'd think they had a whole album of these ready to go.

32. Rittz - Rattle Back
The next cracka rapper you need to be aware of, Rittz, is on the map, officially. This was the dopest shit from the joint he dropped this year.

31. 2 Chainz - Spend It
My nigga told me to stop hating on Tity Boi and open my ears up. And I dig it. My girl ain't got no stomach.

30. Maino - Hand of God
When art imitates life we are all blessed the more. This is one of those joints you probably won't appreciate unless you a Maino fan and get the relevance. I guess they was right about him.

29. Bad Azz - Sweet Pack of Lies
This could probably be a top 10 song if it would have come out a few years back. Just the same its still the best of the Nate Dogg joints to come out since he passed.

28. StepBrothers (Don Trip and All Star(lito) - 4th Song
So I have to say that no rappers have come as far in one year. These two probably are gonna own 2012. Me and my Bbro bumped this shit and burned like 40 sacs before I gave the CD away. I was spending too much money on the weed. HE'S A ZOMBIE!

27. Will - Almost Famous -
My favorite new artist this year letting you know its some new hip hop cats in ATL still. Plus the shit is a dope example of what you gonna get from the whole Thumbs Up label.

26. Davinci - Beer Bitches and Bullshit
Posse cuts are no longer a dime a dozen. Party songs are no longer a commodity. This is the first song you should play when the crew is getting ready to get it going. Roll up.

25. J.Cole - Workout
I was always rooting for the kid with the race issues, and then Jay dropped him and I was like damn, its gonna be hard to find a J. Cole mixtape. Then he dropped this, and I was like, what the fuck is wrong with Jay. I guess J. Cole fucked Rhianna or something that was off limits because the rest of the album was worth it.

24. K-os - Faith feat. Drake - Because the blues guitar licks and the flows bite at ya. Go ahead and let your neck nutate. You know you wanna.

I invented swag. I was on that shit long before Jay. Swingers the movie put me on it. #justsaying

22. Big Krit - Money on the Floor feat. 8ball MJG and 2Chainz
Big Krit and the gang. Pimp C would be proud and if I were from MS, I would be shining right now. This guy in a zone.

21. Gunplay - Rollin feat. Waka Flaka
I have no idea who this person was. And my nigga was like I think that's Ross boy. I was like, that nigga spit wild. And when you scream like that, I gotta believe you.

20. Drake - Marvin's Room
I'm just saying I hate this song still. But I can't deny its dominance. What the fuck is a Drake. Is he no longer a rapper? Did he rap on this song. I can't remember. I feel so smooth when I hear it, I slip away into thoughts about courvosier. I guess I admit I haven't listed to it completely once. It is my new "Whip My Hair."

19. Nas - Nasty

Nas. Nasty if you wanna. If this list was more opinion and less fact, this would be top 10, but this goes up with the best of Nas since Illmatic, so it definitely gets the proper positioning here at 19.

18. Waka Flaka - Round of Applause
I hated Waka Flaka until I heard this one. Not so bad when he don't scream. And it's no surprise he got critical acclaim for this joint. I was hoping they would hate it so I could love it in secret. I wonder if them hoes stripping to it though.

17. Yelawolf - Hard White feat. Lil Jon
The first verse and the return of Lil Jon. And even Yelawolf knew it. I wonder how long he been sitting on that stanza. Way to bring it out in 2011.

16. Wale - Lotus Flower Bomb feat. Miguel
Collabing with RandB singers was once guaranteed, but things have changed. Because this song does the crossover genre much justice, it gets the nod. Ask your girl what she liked this year. I bet she slide this in there too.

15. ASAP Rocky - Peso
So the little nigga rocking the Versace's in the video made this song? Yeah right. Its like he took Wiz flow and ran with it. Touchdown.

14. Lil Wayne - John feat. Rick Ross
Dopest beat this year? Almost. Dopest Lil Wayne and Ross collabo this year? Almost. Because it was the right song at the right time for both of them, it gets a nod.

13. Meek Mill - House Party feat. Young Chris Fuck a girl with the water running. Speaking on experience I see. Great minds think alike.

12. Pac Div - Antifreeze
Because whoever got this beat going was on it. And then them boys did they Pac Div shit all on it. Best trio? I think so.

11. The Roots - Tip the Scale
Because the song itself is genius. And then you find out there's more.

10. Tyler the Creator - Yonkers
Dark goblin Wu-Tang esque. If I was 16 and I heard this, I would probably vow to that OFWEFSD shit and rob my high school. The whole high school. I mean student body, desks, and cafeteria trays. Beware of any young niggas bumping this shit. They screwloose.

9. Kendrick Lamar - Rigormortis
Drummers in the street. Its kind of hard to figure Kendrick. Not really, but you can't pigeon hole him. Try to catch his flow if you think you can. Now where your favorite rapper? He dead. And the sun is under my feet.

8. Kids These Days - Clear Eyes
Because I think their oldest member is like 17. And they are not on some swag shit. And they made my top 10 and I am not on crack.

7. ADd+ - Insomniac Dreaming -
If one song was my favorite of the year, then it was this one. With the Outkast odes throughout, I couldn't resist rolling another one and putting my ADd+ mix on repeat.

6. Lil Wayne - 6 foot 7 feat. Cory Gunz - If Weezy was the greatest rapper alive, that would make this the greatest verse of the year. Fair argument.

5. Big Krit - Dreaming Because the sample along was chopped right. Then Krit came real like always. This time he hit it on the head.

4. DJ Khaled - I'm On One - Because the low-fi, no bass sound effect is what next year is all about. Thanks Drake.

3. Chris Brown - Look At Me Now (RMX) feat. Lil Wayne and Busta Rhymes - Because I did a remix to this beat and killed it, just like everybody else this year.

2. Jay Z and Kanye West - Niggas in Paris - Because you don't need to hear this shit 5 times straight to know that this is the perfect compliment to "All About the Benjamins Remix" at Midnight. Not just tonight, but every night.

1. Kendrick Lamar - ADHD - Because there hasn't been a rapper since Canibus that made me rewind to understand what they are saying. With this one joint Kendrick is showing why he will be the Rakim of the next generation. Oh, and the beat was dope.

Second Round Knockout: My Love / Hate With Canibus

September 9th, 1998. I can not forget the date. I skipped the first half of school to cop the Canibus CD from Blockbuster Music, some 100 blocks away from the flagpole in front of my high school. By the time I made it back to the school, just as lunch was ending, I had heard enough. I, like the rest of the hip hop world, was thoroughly deflated by the lack of mathematical function from the young upstart rapper. I really thought he was going to come harder. There are artists that we grab on to in our adolescence for reasons. I think Canibus was the expression of my frustration with the monotony of my feeble existence in North Tulsa. I expected "4,3,2,1" to pale in comparison to the full album. I was still bumping his verse from Common's "One Day...".
Though it's in the middle of the country, Tulsa is a west coast town. If you were into Black Wall Street or Brotha Lynch Hung, then somebody had the CD and you could probably borrow it. There was not a lot of variety in the overall tastes of most of my peers until I began to introduce them to other artists and lyricism. Booker T. Washington High School was thriving and fruitful with bootleg East Coast cd's at the time, because of a brilliant move to get my friend Chris to bootleg copies of the Tony Touch Mixtape. This is how you got music in Tulsa, Oklahoma pre-2000. Chris worked at Blockbuster or something like that and was able to get a CD Duplicator / Recorder as soon as the technology became affordable. If enough people wanted a copy of a CD, he would buy it and then copy it for a small profit. I'd drive up the hype around certain releases and try to get a few dozen people to place orders and if it worked, I got the true copy for free. I think that's how I got my first copy of Cuban Linx too. Sorry Rae. We probably bootlegged the top 50 rappers to come out between 1996 and 2000, which is saying a lot since this is before the whole Napster thing. I am sure his venture was more lucrative than all of my Kool-Aid and Blow Pop hustles combined.
It was different with the Canibus album. Though I'd shared a verse or two with my friends, I knew my classmates would never appreciate lyrics, no matter how hard they were. That was a connection that only I had. But as I listened to the CD on repeat as I returned onto the school grounds, I felt less possessed by hard bars and hard rhymes, and more sad. I felt bamboozled. I was never the hookie type. There was no telling when I would skip school again. The trip and the album were a disappointment.
I listened again and again, studying the music, trying to figure out where the young upstart had gone wrong, There were no answers.
In the latter part of the day, when my regrets crystallized into a chi on my shoulder, a small thing happened. Without asking, one of the guys in my class, Hollis, lifted the headphones from my head to get a listen. Though I probably would have ignored him if he asked, the act of invading my personal space sent me into a tizzy and before you knew it, I took a punch at him. I landed it, then backed away, awaiting a challenge. He didn't swing. He chased me around a table in the room before he caught me and pinned me against the chalkboard. He had at least 50 pounds on me and this was before my growth spurt, so I am sure he could have murdered me if he wanted to. But he let me go and tried to calm the situation, while I continued to stomp up and down the halls. I couldn't believe I started a fight over a Canibus CD.

(editor's note: I didn't get suspended or anything like that. I probably shouldn't have bought 2000 B.C, but I did. And I manage to download or somehow cop every Canibus CD since then. You knew somebody was doing it. It was me. It feels so good to be out of the closet on this one. )

Get Busy Committee - Opening Ceremony

Cocaine Rap. Check. Political Statements. Check. Stanzas about Bimbos in Los Angeles. Check. It must say something about the California sun, when usually this formula leads to classic creations. From the vein of Cypress, with a spike of 3rd Bass, this trio from L.A. put it down on their 16 track mixtape, Opening Ceremony. Scoop DeVille, Ryu, and Apathy run through the gambit of nightlife in L.A. over breaks and boom bap beats more reminscent of their NY brethren. They blend well on the whole tape, but when they put on a Remix with Paul Wall and Xzibit and hold their own and some, it become clear that these guys are built for this sort of group. They feed off of each other like lyrical leeches. My favorite joint, Laura Ling, is dope and its about a chick I want to fuck too, but ya know, fun and political.

The best thing about this group and this mixtape is that each song leaves you wanting more. For the collection to be 16 tracks long, it falls well below 1 hour in running time and a handful of the songs are remixes. Rest assured, I will be following these guys on twitter so I don't miss the next release.

After a month of disappointing label albums (Watch the Throne, The Carter IV-yep, not up to par), it looks like the city of Atlanta continues to do the most with what they got. From Rittz to Will to Cy Hi, its hard not to start thinking that the pendulum is about to swing back to that Atlanta sound and sense.

By now, you know that Cy Hi the Prynce is the secret weapon that Kanye signed early. So early in fact that many were doubting what the fuck Kanye was thinking with the addition to the G.O.O.D Music family. But if you were lucky enough to hear his first big single, "SideWayz", then you know exactly why Kanye put the bid in early.

Now its about time for the Prynce to make some moves. With Pusha T and Big Sean doing successful (for first time releases at that), and Kid Cudi secure in his spot, its about time for G.O.O.D to diversify they funds. With Cons dropped from the label, it looks like the only one left who needs to show and prove is Cy Hi.

If this mixtape collection from DJ Scream and DJ Spinz is any testament, the label is about to introduce another artist that will be here to stay. Although this collections features, Cy's rhymes and not his beats, he still manages to peruse and pick a variety of forgotten instrumentals, giving birth to them again with his witty wordplay and anti hype lyrics. If there is only one thing that you take from this mix, it will no doubtedly be that Cy Hi is someone to watch out for.

Cults album 'now streaming' via NPR. Is it the 'Album of 2k11'?

I remember when Cults was just a band that indie critics could resent for writing 'one of the greatest Gorilla Vs. Bear core MP3s of all time. [via Going Outside]' Now every1 can resent them for 'having a buzzworthy album that is now streaming on NPR, attempting 2 sell a couple thousand more albums 2 NPR cool dads.' Most GVBcore bands 'swirl down the shitter' into an Altered Zone of irrelevancy, but it seems like Cults has continued to escalate into relevant echelons of relevant buzz relevancy pyramid tier levels. Does Cults 'deserve the buzz'? How did they break free from the buzz drought? Will they become 'the next Arcade Fire' if they add a ginger bro who bangs on shit, the lead singer bro shaves the sides of his head, and the singer broad morphs in2 a rat queen with a terrible voice and a puff of hair [via Regine] and they move to Canada and start writing electro Bruce Springsteen songs?
Anyways I haven't listened 2 this album because I h8 NPR and I think it is totally BS that they get premium alt content and sell ads and are a business and a competitor 2 blogs, except they are funded by tax dollars. Really wish P4k got some government funding. Do yall <3 NPR, or is it just like 'a blog 4 ppl who don't know what blogs are'?

The long awaited When Pigs Fly is a few weeks fresh now so I thought it was time to put a few verbs and adjectives to it. By now you've heard the duo or seen them around town at a show here or there so its pretty obvious that I beg a late pass. The duo is releasing the album for free via its bandcamp and for profit at Itunes. The cd is worth a play or two. I can't really say if I love it or not yet. It might have to grow on me still.

Track 1 The Rapper and the Poet - somebody should've killed the bitch singing at the end for a spoken word like bridge ala Big Rube. Might've made this song a classic intro.
Track 2 Brain Sex - Mic Workouts on Track 2? Risky. They don't disappoint. But the beat - I hate that climbing synth. So trite. Too Dungeon Family to be flattering.
Track 3 LikeAMug (feat Sore Losers) - I think theres a video for this song. Should've got Damaged Good$ on the remix and made it a bit more special with duos.
Track 4 Greedy (feat Mz Fortune) - We can all use more of that Philly sound. This shit probably go hard live. Jazzy.
Track 5 The Everyday - Tribe would be proud. This might be the stand out track on second listen. Laid back for the ride. Definitely making the cut for the next mixtape.
Track 6 Mary Go (feat Picnic Tyme) - Out of place song. Not sure what to make of it. I guess its for the ladies.
Track 7 Picnic Interlude - Hard to swallow. Confused.
Track 8 Erica and Jamie - Starting to realize why I am on the fence. Three bad songs in a row. Can I have my ten minutes back?
Track 9 Slow Tempo - 12:18 seconds now? Maybe if the raps were at the front the song wouldn't be so wrong to me. Or maybe if the singing was cut altogether.
Track 10 Under (feat Dustin Cavazos) - You had me at piano. Dustin sets this joint right with that abstract white boy rap shit he be on and the singing is simple and accurate, with the female vocals coming into play at the right times. If this was track 6 we might be talking classic.
Track 11 I'm So Dallas (DJ Sober Mix) - Kind of dope ode to Dallas. Best props to Sober for missing damn near nobody. Of course I ain't from around here, so I got no idea if he left out Tum Tum or Pookie and that other nigga.
Track 12 Goodwill - A great B side to The Everyday. These two should be all over their press kits if they smart. Next video even. But fuck that singing shit man. I'll let it slide since they so persistent with it. We get it. Ya'll sing.
Traclk 13 Satellites - Back to the bitches. Bad arrangment is killing this cd. Guess that don't matter no more.
Track 14 Smell My Cologne - ___________ (fill in the blanks)
Track 15 Southbound - Dallas. The South. Just when you thought they wouldn't do it. Representing that highway with the potholes and fucked up ass Mexicans driving, ADd+ bitch! Nawf Dallas stand up!

This week Eminem pushed over 700,000 records, following a week where rapper Drake almost sold half a million in a week. These numbers might reflect Eminem's popularity among his white fans and Drakes ability to please the ears on your lady, but they still did numbers, and numbers don't lie. What does it take to sell 400,000 records in a week? What kind of team do you need to get that thing in motion? How much marketing money is in the project?

Everybody is rapping to get money. Few are rapping for the sport. Whether commercial, independent, or underground, rappers are trying to make money in the hood, knowing a few more dollars in means a few more dollars out on studio equipment or at least a gold chain for the live show.

Cool. If you're in it for the money, here's a tip for you salesman. All I hear these days is rappers telling me how their cd got something for everybody, or how they are in their own zone and on some futuristic shit, yet its these same artists that are constantly running up to me asking me how they can get over.
"What am I doing wrong?" they say when their Facebook link ain't clicked enough.

The truth is there is no formula. If you want to sell 400,000 records, make a wish, because that shit is truly a gift from god. Market all you want, if the music sucks, its not getting bumped. One thing is for certain, if your CD has something for everybody, you're not going to sell shit. If you're all up in your own zone, its going to be impossible to sell anything. You know why Em and Drake did numbers? They know they niche and they work it to perfection. I didn't buy either album, but I know what I'm missing out on. Drake was all over MTV this week and if I didn't know all 6 of Eminems songs from his video's I might've downloaded his disc. Their niche just ain't my niche, but if i ever feel like some R&B rap or some crazy flow, I know where to find it.

I ramble to say this: if I don't know your angle, or your style, or your sound, and respect it for being uniquely yours, then I don't trust you. I don't know about marketing, and getting your own day on MTV2, but I know about a movement. You are the voice of your movement. If your message is unclear, why would I want to fuck with you. How you gonna get to Eminem levels if you can't get your facebook fans to listen? If your music is thugged out and party tracks and something for the ladies, then you are lost homey, and I'm not going there with you. People aren't stupid. How many people you know fight, fuck, and party all day? Its just not a story / message we want to hear.

So, poor, lonely, confused rapper, this is for you. This is your chance to do some soul searching and ask yourself what message you want to share to the world. Now ask yourself, does all your music speak to this point? Clearly? Maybe you need to dumb it down or maybe you need to tighten up your lyrics.

What are you trying to say to the people? Write down one line, one mission statement for your career or art. Now be real with yourself- will 400,000 people want to share this message? Is it a message that has been expressed before? If you can say yes to the first question, and no to the second, you might have what it takes to go platinum.

If not, just make music; Be an artist, not a salesmen. If your shit is hot, it will catch on.

For as long as I can remember my Life has been filled with interesting challenges. No matter where I have turned there has always been something in my path to test my will to succeed. These past 2 years were no exception. I was tried and tested in ways I couldn't believe. I had 2 options, I could either 1) Give up or 2) Resist. Obviously I chose to Resist, thus my internal movement “The Resistance” was born. The Resistance is more than my mixtape. It’s my declaration against any trial, obstacle, or hardship which threatens my will to fulfill my destiny. Giving up is not an option.

I love watching films like The Terminator, The Matrix, and Star Wars. In each of these stories there exist a small "Rebel Alliance" or movement (The Resistance) that faces all opposition skillfully and tactfully in order to preserve the good of the Universe. Without them there is no Hope.....Without them there is no Story. Life doesn’t get better when we complain...It improves when we decide enough is enough and do what is necessary to change it. This is my contribution to that very cause. This is my effort to inspire those who want better for themselves.

I appreciate each and every last one of you who have inspired me to bring this mixtape into fruition. GOD knows I worked hard on it. May you enjoy. Let no Opposition break your will, and have Peace in the midst of it all!

Sleigh Bells is loud. Like M.I.A. on acid loud. Or Beastie Boys with ADHD loud. The electro-pop duo of guitarist, producer and songwriter, Derek Miller and vocalist, Alexis Krauss are making a lot of noise. Literally. Their performances at SXSW and the CMJ music marathon have made them a hot commodity despite the fact they've recorded fewer songs than Jay Electronica.
The music is full of heavy bass, thunderclaps, more bass and guitar riffs that would make Marty McFly want to plug his ears. Alexis' voice, a mish-mash of Gwen Stefani and a non-annoying Ke$ha, becomes more of an accoutrement to the instrumentation.
Bottom line: it knocks. Sleigh Bells music is like standing in the middle of a Ghanaian drum line during a fireworks show under a thunderstorm. It's disorienting and enthralling. They have a new album called Treats at your local record store and saloon as we speak. Here's their first single, "Tell 'Em," which sounds more like a kick-ass anime score than a lead single for an album. Play this loud in the whip and don't forget to bring some Advil with you.

When Pigs Fly Snippets- Click to Preview the Album - Coming May 18th

There's a new tape coming at the end of the month that is sure to get a ten thousand downloads locally. There is going to be a dope ass concert and maybe even an album release party to smash with it. There will be a couple of write ups on the local artsy paper and their will be a slew of tweets and retweets about the way the album sounds in an Ipod vs. the way the album sounds in the car with beats. There will inevitably be a new slang word or two adopted from the myriad of rhymes and wordplay that will be encompassed on the disc. No I haven't got an advanced copy (though that would be nice - onerevolutionent@gmail.com). No I am not psychic either. I just know a good thing brewing when I see it. All the clues are there.

First there is a certain mystery still about the two. There are difference that separate the duo and that will draw the attention of everybody locally looking to see what they are gonna sound like. One of those differences is Picnictyme. If they didn't have a monster team, they probably would still get some buzz. Their last offering Power of the Tongue proved that they could come with a bar or two for that ass. The thing is, they do have a monster team. This album will be produced entirely by Picnictyme, a local favorite with deep roots in the Dallas hipster crowd. That's a big head nod for two relatively unknown emcees this time a year ago. Their go to gal Rosalinda has been blowing up the group in 140 characters or less since late last year when they first released snippets from the disc When Pigs Fly, coming May 18th. Even the Dallas Observer leaked a copy of their latest single "Howdy Do" in late March. So its looking pretty good for the duo on this project.

There is a spot at the table waiting for A.Dd+. All they have to do is deliver. When Pigs Fly has got to bring home the bacon, lame pun intended bitches. I'm not mad at the promotion on this joint. They have taken their time and wound up with as much energy and anticipation around this project, if not more than there has been for any other local artists lately. So right now as I write this and at the time you read this, the duo will be probably be putting the finishing touches and remixes on the release. They will probably be working the twitter trying, trying, trying to get you please, please, please listen to their music. Dotting the Ts. Crossing the Is.

So I'm setting a precedent. I'm putting all my money on A.Dd+ for the album of the month. If they have been this on point with the promo so far, the release will probably come off perfect. That means I should be satisfied with their May 15th offering at the Lounge on Elm Street. If picnictyme can take the year off pretty much and only work on this one project pretty much, then I trust he will deliver some classics on here and hold his throne. Howdy Do has cooled off, so I expect another leak sometime in the next couple of days to keep the buzz going and the fans interested. But above all, I expect to hear some good music when the duo known as A.Dd+ comes with their sophomore effort, When Pigs Fly. Let the countdown begin. Unless they go wide left with the shit they kick, its already game time. The trophy already has their name on it.

Paying homage to the goofiest dorkiest of the famed Los Angelos Lakers Showtime franchise is something you can only do if you coming nice as James Worthy and Magic with it. This tape does that. Bundled and Wrapped in a dopehouse in San Antonio, this collection of joints pack the hustle of Kurt Rambis, floor burns and all. Young Gab, Young Texxus, and Spark Dawg hold it down like its time to pop championship champagne on the track "I'm Gucci". Laid back beat. Perfect for rolling up or rolling down the block, or both if you can do it at the same time. San Antonio is repped very well on the mixtape, but all of Texas come thru for this one. Peep B. Hardy on "WTF RU" produced by the Innovators. Really hard not to turn this cd up from start to finish and put it on repeat. This is one of the few mixtapes that you have to make two copies of. One for the house and one for the car. And you gotta play it in the car, because the production, from Greg C, the Audio Forensiks, and others, is killing most of the beats we been hearing on the radio for the last year or so. Though a mix of many different producers contributed to the tape, the overall mix and track sequence gives it more of an album feel. I could talk about it but you just need to hear it. NBA Years (1980-1995)

Rambis was drafted by the New York Knicks as the 58th pick in the 1980 NBA Draft, but he was subsequently waived by the Knicks before playing in Greece, where he also holds citizenship. There he joined the Greek League club AEK Athens, under the name Kyriakos Rambidis, and he won the Greek Cup in 1981.
He was re-signed by the Knicks in 1981 but never played a game for them. His success as an NBA player started when he was signed as a free agent by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1981. Rambis spent most of his 14 seasons in the NBA with the Lakers, winning championships in 1982, 1985, 1987, and 1988. Rambis also played for the Charlotte Hornets, Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings before returning to the Lakers in 1993.
During his playing days, Rambis was a favorite among the Lakers fans because of his status as an over-achieving underdog and ultimate team-player. Known for his defensive and rebounding skills, Rambis also was an efficient clean-up man on offense, with his field goal percentage reaching 59.5% at the peak of his career. He was remembered in both Santa Clara and Los Angeles for his all-out effort and willingness to do the "dirty work" that many players do not embrace. Rambis usually wore a thick moustache and thick-rimmed black glasses, prompting Lakers announcer Chick Hearn to nickname him "Superman" (in reference to the character's alter ego, Clark Kent). He finally retired with the Lakers in 1995 after 14 years in the NBA.

The Lounge on Elm - Dallas and Deep Ellum's Home for Hip Hop

Where can you go in Dallas and see the best concerts and performances from local artists and those just out of the national spotlight? The Lounge On Elm Street of course. Since its opening a few years back, the venue has been a starting point for some of the cities best talents, especially in the hip hop community. Ask anybody from the Duncanville to Denton and they will tell you that the Lounge supports hip hop to the fullest. The venue packs 400 people at capacity, which is perfectly fine for the acts that are normally booked here. There have been many legendary performances that have taken place here, from Devin the Dude to local star Playdough. The Lounge is doing its part to bring together the many talented artists in Dallas by giving them a stage to perform. In doing so, the venue has helped to reestablish Deep Ellum as a hot spot in the night life and local music scenes. By Patrick Michels Nothing brings out a neighborhood's true colors like a street festival--that sweaty, dreadlocked, beer-swilling cousin of the farmers market. You just don't know a place till you've walked its streets with a clever T-shirt and a party cup, and for 16 years now, the Deep Ellum Arts Festival has been helping you get to know the city's best-loved neighborhood with a perfect mix of art, music and street food. The three-day festival is taking over six blocks of Main Street between the Good-Latimer Expressway and Hall Street, with work from 120 artists led by this year's featured artist, Deep Ellum mural czar Frank Campagna. This weekend will also see the return of the art cars, the wildest grass-covered, over-welded, animal-inspired automotive beasts. The festival has a full lineup of music across four stages, including acts like Spector 45, Paul Slavens and Hendrick, with a Texas blues stage new for 2010. Other highlights of the weekend include the at 11 a.m., a stage dedicated to performance art and poetry, and the death- and decade-defying inline skating stunt show. You can be one of 60,000 expected to drop by the free festival, which benefits the Deep Ellum Association and Foundation, from 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Saturday, and 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday. The Review by Ryan Mega

1. Twenty Feet Tall - Perfect intro, spacey, rocking electric piano organ sounding groove reminiscent of J.Dilla's work on Common's 4th CD makes me wonder how old the track is though.

2. Window Seat - The reason this CD is playing on repeat. Her voice ain't been this smooth and delicate since "Otha Side of the Game".

3. Agitation - Is that a sample? Why does that riff sound so familiar? "Going through a thing now... Feeling to pull this thang out.... What a Day?...". Don't that say it all?

4. Turn Me Away (get muny)- Kills the Junior Mafia Track Get Money in all the right ways. Theme song for the gold digger in us all.

5.Gone Baby, Don't Be Long - Is this a single? My head is bobbing like its on the radio or in the clubs. It seems familiar right away. Somebody has been in the studio feeling good as evidenced by this track.

6. Umm Hmm- This might be my favorite. I love the sampled chorus. Erykah is back in full effect at this point. Have to put this one on repeat a few times before I move on. She doing her thing on this one. She should let me hop on the remix. Okay maybe not me, but a good verse on here wouldn't hurt. The beat is dope.

7. Love- Fuck the wack intro with its high pitched effects. Thumbs up to the song. Guitar is sexy and jazzy at the same time. The verses seem more like hooks on here though. Not the standout track on the CD. Unfortunately, one of the longest tracks on the CD. And right after "Umm Hmm" had me on a high note. Damn. Sounds more like a continuation of The Healer / Hip Hop from the last CD.

8. You Loving Me (session)- The song title makes me thing bedroom action. The track isn't there though. I mean you can ~~fuck~~ make love to it if you want, but its kind of quick and just a little diddly or skit so you might wanna pop in another Erykah disc for that jawn.

9. Fall in Love (your funeral)- Heard the track before so it takes a little punch out of the overall song, but head still bobbing. Really scared that Ms. Badu is telling me that her love = funeral. Looking at how she has inspired some of hip hops finest emcees, I think she is being quite ironic here. The CD is starting to take a dive now. But must push on. Good music ahead. The Ankh doesn't lie.

10. Incense- Mellow Mood Music. The song brings the overall feel of the CD back to a spiritual affair; Badu blesses the track with soft cooing and guest Kirsten Agnesta does something in Porteguese I think. It fits. Good save.

11.Out my Mind, Just in Time - Poetic. Billie Holiday would be proud. Erykah rips a few different arrangments and sequences in a medley of a last track. More highs then lows.

Overall Rating = 4.5/5

Its been a couple of years since the first New Amerykah dropped. This is the second part to the two part disc. I start by saying this because this cd stands alone from the previous disc. Five years after Worldwide Underground solidified Ms. Badu as a main stay at the top of R & B and neo-soul, New Amerykah Pt. 1 dropped out of nowhere. The music was ground to the most basic of all things Badu. A little soul and a little B-girl bravado. Sadly, the cover seems to be the most impressive thing about the first disc, then and now. That is why this collection of music is all the more important. This is the second disc in the New Amerykah series and it seems to complete the ideas or messages being brought up from the first part of the CD. The mood is complete Erykah. There is no wonderment of what went wrong when this disc ends. She did everything right. Maybe that's why she saw the need to promote this disc a little more differently with her stunt in downtown Dallas. It may not be necessary for the long time fans, who have been here since On and On first hit BET. But for those of us who might've forgot just how bad this girl can be, this disc is a reminder that Erykah has always got something to say of importance, if we can just tune in to the message.

Fat Pimp and Dorrough get it in at La Zona Rosa Club (612 W 4th S) on Wednesday March 17th with headliners Paul Wall and Chamillionaire. Pretty much anybody who was hot or had a hit record from Texas will be here. Look out for those rap celebs. Shows start at 8:15.

Thursday March 18th

There are no local performers that I know worth checking out on Thursday (shame on you SXSW), but hip hop is in full effect. There will be at least 3 clubs with a slew of big hitters performing. The best bets are Aces Lounge (222 E 6th St) where Reflection Eternal headline the likes of Gangrene, Kev Brown, and 88 Keys; The Independent (501 N IH 35) where you can get a dose of Planet Asia, Kam Moye, and the Nappy Roots; Victory Grill (1104 E 11th S) has Slum Village and Marv One; or Klub Krucial (614 E 6th St) where Killer Mike headlines with Mistah F.A.B and the Pack. Most shows start by 8:30 on this night.

Friday March 19th

The Independent (501 N IH 35) is host to Dallas's own Damaged Good$ as they perform with the likes of Anti-Pop Consortium and some of the best, critically acclaimed musicians in the festival. Damaged Good$ hit the stage at 10:00 pm, so they'll be done in time to go hang at the Mohawk Patio (912 Red River St) and check out the Cool Kids at 11:30 or The Kids in the Hall at The Scoot In (1308 E 4th St) (gotta rep Chicago a little out there baby).

Saturday March 20th

There are so many rap shows going down on Saturday that it is quite the shame that no Dallas hip hop is spotlighted that day either. The best show looks to be at the Independent (501 N IH 35) where Kurupt and DJ Quik are scheduled to appear, but on this sort of night, you should be able to fall in anywhere and hear some good hip hop.

Sunday March 21st

If you are still in Austin on Sunday then you're either local, unemployed, or a big fan of Led Zeppelin 2 (from Chicago!). There are no hip hop shows scheduled for Sunday. Most people will have their facebooks flooded with paparazzi pictures and stories of what celebs they met, or what collaborators they met for their new projects. Maybe you should tour the city and collect images for your scrapbook as well.

Da Hitman Presents: Wreckamic is Grizzly Bear Adams

Track 1. On My Grizzly - The first cut should be the deepest. Wreckamic brings it right from the drop. "Flow is heaven sent", describes the track riding to a tee. The stabbing chords from the melody carry the flow perfectly.

Track 2. The Anthem - Da Hitman's cuts and blends intro the track well. Wreck steps up the battle lines from the get go. Some good lines in there about Steve Austin and Steve aka Wreckamic's awesomeness.

Track 3. Scream Atcha Man - I was told that this track was made back in 2006. Makes sense because that was the 'Holla at your boy" days, but the mastering and remix done makes it sound current. DJ's need to put this in club rotation asap.

Track 4. Tha Loot - Over a Biggie sample from "Gimme the Loot", Wreckamic runs at the scared people in the game. From the streets to the label, hes going at the lames and dropping some valid opinions on the game. "Smooth as a jellybean, fire as a fire cracker/ the flyest rapper, it don't matter whether I'm a cracker / or not." Wreckamic is a problem.

Track 5. Money - "Roaches all up in my place, but I don't have no groceries". Poignant lyrics over a classic Marvin Gaye Sample. If I wasn't at the library right now stealing Wifi, I'd light one for the mood of this song. Wreck's versatility is on stage.

Track 6. Girlz - Wreckamic's gets his Electric Relaxation on as he runs down how he likes them. Wreckamic's version is actually more in the vein of Jay Z's "Girls, Girls, Girls" as he runs down the many different styles, shapes, and personalities of the girls he likes to get with. Before the song ends, he describes at least 40 different types. Wreck if you're reading this, please pack some condoms.

Track 7. Hip Hop XXL - reminds me of Guru or Jeru the Damaja going in on the game just to remind you that they are different. Wreck is not an average rapper. He is not going to win you over with a dance hit. He is going to bring you hip hop on a higher level. The beat is from another era, and that may be the tracks biggest detraction, but considering this mixtape as a collection of B-Sides and Bootlegs, it fits in good with the overall theme.

Track 8. Precious Moments - This is that Ghostface "All That I got is You" shit right here. From the sped up soul sample to the imagery that Wreck details in his verses, the track begs the listener to dig into themselves. Two minutes and forty eight seconds of ear therapy. This is a Wreckamic classic. Add this track to the greatest hits.

Track 9. Morning Coffee - By now the CD is so mellow that I really need to get the fuck out of this library and go blow one. The track is laid back like the best of 9th Wonder. Wreck hits it lyrically with the chorus on "Morning Coffee" as a metaphor for his flow. Wake your Ass up!

Track 10. I See You - This is on some Nas, Slick Rick, Biggie shit. He does the split personality thing as he raps the conflict of being Steve Mullen vs. Wreckamic. The track is dope. Sounds like a throwaway from the American Gangster Movie Soundtrack.

Track 11. Underdog - I'm not an emcee, but if I was, I'd turn this track after 20 seconds. He is embarrassing mofos on this track. Wreck kills it and it sounds almost as if he is barely trying. Game shut down.

Track 12. Like This or Like That - Another club banger. Put this in rotation asap. Texas needs to get at Wreckamic for the remix for this one. I put my money on this being a big joint this spring and early summer.

Track 13. Make it Happen - Get the Goose. Girls bout to get loose. I listened to this song with half an ear, but its a good little twist up for the girls. While there are other sentimental tracks, and Girls is about girls, Make It Happen, is the closest Wreck gets to getting his L.L Cool J on.

Track 14. Another Story - This mixtape is so fluid in its transitions and blends. A big shout to Da Hitman for the remarkable job he did in sequencing the tracks. The track itself is an introverted joint where Wreck gets personal with the people , detailing the issues he's had with women and the growth that these relationships have sparked.

Track 15 I Know I Am - Featuring Bobby Creekwater is the anointing track on the mix. Bobby has been getting his buzz up in the underground for the last year. Wreckamic holds his own with one of Slim Shady's only signees. His verse kills it. Which begs the question - when will Wreck get his shine? Lyrically he is in a zone all his one.

This collection of music was made over a year ago if not longer. Da Hitman spiced it up a bit with the mixes and cuts, but the lyrics have been in the archives for a second. So I ask you DFW hip hoppers, If Wreck was writing this sick and prolific on this collection of old joints, just where do you expect him to go when he drops the new God of Flow. Step your lyrics up. You have been warned.

For the last few months it has been my pleasure to witness the creation of this mix tape, from beat listening parties to charity events to remixing and mastering sessions. I have witnessed the duality of the group and can bear witness to how they blend together like that one Atlanta duo. The mix tape dropped a few nights ago. It was released when Damaged Good$ reached 1,000 fans on facebook. They had 200 the day before they started the facebook campaign. That was 3 days before the tape dropped. How did they get there fan count up so quick? They spread the love so the love is given back.

If you didn't know, Spread Love Not Germs is a charitable project. From the band's website:

$pread Love Not Germ$ is our first charity based project. We felt that this project was perfect considering the economic climate. Every month we released a single, coupled with a charity event to benefit certain organizations. We wanted this project to spark a movement of selfless actions in a world where everyone is driven by material things and are obsessed with money. We put this event together without spending/making a dime. So now you have absolutely NO EXCUSE to not do your part wherever you are on this planet. If you buy rims...then you can donate to the Haiti fund. If you are making it rain....then you can organize a food drive.....That simple.

This mission statement is also the groups dilemma. They are no where near the norm in hip hop. I mean, rappers who rap for no money don't exist anymore right? Everybody got to get dough right? Ain't that hip hop? Damaged Good$ embody the core of what pure hip hop is and should be - community activism. From the parks in the Bronx nearly 30 years ago to the streets of the Gaza strip today, emcees have always been a voice or intonation of the zeitgeist for those that struggle. That's why we love the streets so much. Well the streets don't love Damaged Good$. At this point, the duo's foreign buzz is equal or bigger than their local notoriety. Even a trip to the Dallas Observer Music Awards did little to garnish more than an raised eyebrow from the local heavyweights in the rap game. The reason is pretty obvious to anybody with ears. The music they make is so far left field that the average hip hop listener has no way of digesting it. I'm not alone in this observation. The duo knows this. Their last single before the mix tape's official release was called "We Hate Damaged Good$ Too". They have come to revere this shunning, even rollicking in the zone that they have come to create for themselves.

Chris aka Coool Dundee and Theodore aka Trak Bully are not going to change their style up though. Nope. Never. If they did, it would be a shame for the game as well. Like every genre of music before it, hip hop appears to have usurped its identity in exchange for the almighty dollar. And in order to survive there must be a segmentation of the culture. Take jazz for example. Nearly 75 years after its creation, there is rarely a common denominator to link the music being made now to the music being made then. Hate the Damaged Good$ all you want, but they are the necessary "new wave" that will push the limits of what is and what will be considered hip hop. And if there is one denominator that is undeviating in both genres, jazz and hip hop, then that is creativity. Charlie Parker's creativity blazed paths for Miles Davis. The Damaged Good$ are worthy to be called trailblazers.

I've joked with the guys a lot about this. They might ask me what I think, but they aren't listening to nobody but themselves in the end. If it was up to me, I'd have Dundee get it in on a groovy grown and sexy for the ladies every few songs and maybe dress up the guys in matching suits at their shows. And I'd definitely have to change up the philosophy on getting paid to do these shows. But as entertaining as that may sound, the Good$ refuse to change up or go for the gimmicks.

"Spread Love Not Germs" is a testament to their on going saga to break down the barrier in your brain. And they are going to do it their way. So many people are hating. And if they not hating, then they are motivating you to do ignorant shit. Who needs that in the world? How about some music that makes you want to party or relax and love life?

Some of you are still stuck on the sound. It reminds me of Outkast when Andre 3000 dropped "Hey Ya" and it took me months before I realized how brilliantly groundbreaking it was. This tape is more toned up and tweeked than the previous offerings from the group. True DMG fans are going to be very satisfied with the progression over the last year as displayed on a song like "The Great Escape". With the help of Johnny Moog they stunt it out with their party anthem "Dopest, Flyest". "Spread Love Not Germs" was given the thumbs up by the world famous DJ Benzi (google him), who officially cosigned the release of the mix tape.

And you might notice that One Revolution Entertainment has a hand in presenting the mix tape as well. We supported Damaged Good$ because of their support for local charities. On March 6th, the duo perform their last concert for charity in conjunction with the release. Feel free to join the party. They're doing it for a good cause. That's why I got their back. That's why their die hard fans got their back.

But you don't need Benzi to tell you that the music is hot. And you don't need me or 1,000 people on facebook to tell you that the message is necessary. The album is available for free. When Pigs Fly is the name of the tape. And Add Plus aka ADd+ is the name of the duo. If you're like me, then you are just getting wind of this duo. Truth be told, they are a few albums in. Last years intro to the Dallas music scene The 808 Presents: The Power of the Tongue was the most slept on release in 2009. This go round, the duo is making sure that their new release garnishes the acclaim it so rightly deserves. Produced almost entirely by PicnicTyme, the sounds are a bit more melodic and laid back from last years release and should be enough to solidify the ADd+ guys as staples in the growing hipster raps scene in Dallas with others like Sore Losers and Damaged Good$.

One might think that the city has enough hipster duos, but unlike the other groups mentioned, ADd+ have a bit of a chip on their shoulder. Their sound is more street and edgier than any other group bundled in this crowd. Maybe its their Memphis roots, but there is a different aggression expressed on songs such as "Release", that other hipsters wouldn't fathom creating because its just too far from their reality. "Po' My Liqa" though laid back is full of battle rhymes and swagger that challenges anyone to question their ability to come with the lyricals. And that was last years tape.

Snippets are available on the bands bandcamp. With PicNicTyme rumored to do the majority of the production, the new tape, "When Pigs Fly" will be one of the best releases to drop in the next few months.

A crazy dynamic must exist if a hip hop ensemble is to survive. A soloist is judged on his own merits. Rightfully so, he is either accepted or rejected initially and unlikely to change the fan's first impression. In a duo, the two must play upon each other, complimenting each other at all times. If one emcee takes a verse off, it is pertinent that his band mate step up and handle the slack. This unbalanced state can't support productivity for too long before the duo becomes irrelevant. The producing artist will reach for the career that she or he may still have as a soloist. In a trio, the goal is to blend. If a duo is a compliment, a trio is flattery. To succeed, each person gives not just their all, but whatever is necessary to make the sound whole, even if it means giving less. The trio fails when one of the trio isn't as serious, committed, or talented as the other group members. If the Fugees had the ability to check their egos, its no telling where the sequel to "The Score" would have taken them. When you listen to the Texas trio, Dem Southernfolkz, the sound is so clean, collected, and complete that the balance within their group dynamic cannot be questioned. They deliver the perfect mix of flavors to deliver a tasty sound for our ears to enjoy.

Composed of Kinfolk Jack, Saturday Alridge, and Big Ben, their beginnings in 2001, and the story of the groups existence is one of sacrifice, commitment, and dedication to each other and the groups focus. Kinfolk Jack and Big Ben met in the army serving tours in Iraq. They used technology to email songs and verses to each other and stay motivated, though war, guns, and thousands of miles separated them. Years later when Saturday joined the group, his skills blended with his dedication for making quality music, exemplified the story of the original two members. "Feels Like", a jazzy track with a lounge feel, is prime example of what we get from their cultivation. We should all say a collective thank you. In a region where relaxation and contemplation are reserved for Erykah Badu types, its nice to hear a difference. If compared to any other sound, their production is a cross of Pete Rock and 9th Wonder. But any comparisons end there. The individuality of their flows separate their sound from anything we have heard before. True, Little Brother rides a track right, but these guys flow into it like water into levees. Their slang and twang could be compared to ATL artists like Goodie Mob or Outkast, but their approach is direct, so you don't miss the message. Listen to "Gub'ment Cheese" featuring Royce Da 5'9 and you'll hear exactly what I mean. The beat rocks back and forth like a deacon in the front row on Sunday morning.

The group knows what they are doing. Its amazing to me that they aren't the biggest group in the city and maybe the state. We all know why. Nobody is a thinker anymore and the current state of hip hop appeases the brain dead only. This is a subject that the group is very aware of and they approach it lyrically on many of the songs on the E.P. But they aren't going to change or dumb it down for publicity. That's not them. If they were concerned with the tastes of a feeble rap majority then they wouldn't be hear today making the sound that we need. If hip hop was nutrition, the groups energy is Vitamin C in a world full of fiber.

To add on to the accolades, their stage show befits all the time and sacrifice that was put in to make the music happen. They keep the crowd going with their energy, with voracious tones rumbling the room. I originally heard the group at last years Dallas Observer Music Awards (DOMA for short- act like you know) show on lower Greenville, but it was their return to Good Records a few months ago that solidified their potential to me. The group is posed to have a breakout year. Catch them in town. They have shows lined up throughout the spring. You don't wanna miss this. Trust me. You need it. The world needs it.

I have been in the city for two years and I have listened to the two big urban stations a total of 5 hours before I realized they both are on that bullshit as far as programming is concerned. Clear Channel and Radio One aren't repping the city - face it. Don't worry though. There is still an outlet for local musicians to get the radio they want. There is still a place for real hip hop fans to get their eargasms. UTD radio is the finest in college radio in the city. If you don't know, college radio can play whatever they want because the programmer isn't being paid to play the records (payola). At UTD, you can find many different formats that all cater to that new new and underground. You will never hear the same song twice in a day. One of the biggest guys on campus is Jacob Terry aka Jake Crates. Jake's love for hip hop is evident in his radio show. He is in control of what gets played. Jake Crates exercises this freedom like Fredrick Douglass on January 2nd, 1983. Every Wednesday, you can catch the best hip hop radio show in the city live on the internet. Coming with a swagger reminiscent of the finest of the N.Y titans, GAB brings an east coast flavor similar to Mobb Deep or Red Cafe to the songs that he creates. His flow chops in and out of the drum and snare as he goes in lyrically. He is already ghostwriting for other emcees in the game. GAB's originality and style stand out like a sore thumb in a region that is fixed on candy and trunk bang. His zone is all his own. On his last mixtape, GAB 4 President, he does a pretty good job of defending this zone and making it his own. His "Paper Planes" remix was actually a bit better than the ones that were released on the radio when the song originally dropped in 2008. To hear GAB's old stuff check out GAB 4 President @ Datpiff. Listen to "Bent Backwards" before your next soiree and see what happens. "The Hustle" featuring Spank is another favorite. On the latter track, he lists his ambitions over one of the more grimier beats on the mixtape.

In the few weeks since going live with his new label, Mega Royal Records, Dallas hip-hop producer and DJ Rob Viktum has already given away The Big Gold Instrumentals, a beat tape by Vanderslice that you can download for free via Mediafire or UserShare. And he already has ideas for upcoming releases next year including artists AWAR, AddLib & Jabee and Chief.

But don't expect everything from the label to be a freebie.

"Right now, I want to kind of ease into it," he says. "It's my way of putting out stuff I like, and it makes it easier to put out my own music. In 2010, we'll be doing freebies and selling stuff. At a certain point you realize that you're devaluing yourself by just putting out free stuff."

Fittingly, the first item for actual sale on his label will be under his own name, and a project very close to his heart: the sequel to his 2007 compilation, Progress.

Like Progress before it, Progress Volume 2 (scheduled for a January 12 release) will consist of beats created from classic and popular Cambodian music. Unlike the original, though, the sequel aims to raise money for Cambodian charities and increase local awareness on cultural climate in that overseas nation.

Viktum became aware of the horrors inflicted on the Cambodian people by the Pol Pot-led Khmer Rouge through his wife, Tavy Um, whose family escaped Cambodia. Knowing of his interest in music, her father gave him a treasure trove of vinyl records he had managed to save--and from that collection came the bulk of the sounds created on both the initial and upcoming Progress releases.

"We're talking about music that was destroyed, music that doesn't exist anymore because it was banned," Viktum explains.

Along with more information about the upcoming release, formal announcement about the Cambodian charity to benefit from the album will be made by Mega Royal next week, Viktum says.

First off who would have ever thought that inadvertently Dorrough of "Walk That Walk" and "Ice Cream Paint Job" fame would have put together such a duo. A chance meeting in a brief apartment visit would then make music like this. Freeloaders is eclectic trip through the lives of Blue and Brown and the duos slacker habits. From the beginning to the end I really didn't know what to expect on the next track. Blue's ear for the perfect sample and Brown's diverse flow and wordplay keeps you on your toes. On the "The Deadly Intro" Blue recites rhymes while a haunting untuned string is plucked in the background thus starting the project on a somber note. The mood is lighted as the bright guitar introduces you to "Birthday". Blue's production shines as Brown spits of a great day. Brown's subject matter is pretty diverse as demonstrated on tracks like "As I Wander", "Super Villain Music", and "Loner Daze". On the eleventh track titled "The Audio Bio" Blue speaks on his youth and upbringing which is a track where he spills his heart on it. It also seems as if he is holding back as well. Blue helps introduce his little brother of Unkommon Kolor fame Blue the Great to rapping on the riding track "Cooler than Coach K". They even managed to get 2dopeboyz favorite Kendrick Lamar on "Everywhere That We Go". The album is definitely a breath of fresh air for an area that is notorious for having artists make instructional videos of their singles. Most emcees just rap. Some emcees might make beats. Some emcees sing. Stein aka EinStein aka EmHotep is a man that can do it all. He is already two albums in, and is gearing up another feast for the streets. It will be amazing to see if he has any guest apperances, but then again, when you can write, produce, arrange, mix, master, and edit your own work alone, why would you invite another chef into the kitchen? Stein's capable of delivering home cooked hip hop all by his lonesome. Listen to his CD Love Episode and you will agree. On "Please", a plea to the hip hop community and most importantly the emcee, Stein spits Goodie Mob like lyrics over a track that sounds like the best of the Dungeon Family. On "Feel My Flow" Einstein does his thing, displaying his knack for singing and rapping all on one song. You can't box this guy in. Ever. Just when you think you know what he is about, he does something different. He is very versatile. Check out "My First", a ballad where he actually sings. How many word smiths you know sing? I don't mean like Lil Wayne, but really hitting notes and melodies. The killer combination allows Stein to give many different flavors to the same track. Oh and chances are, he made the beat too.

The guy known as Chucky Sly doesn't rap for the sake of riddling. True public enemy disciple, Chucky delivers thought provoking lyrics and a provacative approach without being too opinionated or preachy. He speaks to the conscious of street dudes as Jay Z did when he first arrived on the scene. While Jay Z focused on the perils of success, Chucky Sly brings a narrative about the entire situation, hook, line, and sinker. Check the song "Jimmy is about to die" an ode to a drug dealer named Jimmy who is too hung up on his success of today to see the future that awaits him tomorrow. Within 3 verses, Sly effectively conveys the risks and pitfalls of a life in hustling, the bottom being death. Chucky Sly is a seasoned vet when it comes to writing rhymes. He has at least 15 years of recording music behind him and is definitely one of the most important figures yet to blow in the Dallas hip hop scene. The word hipster has been a growing term in the hip hop community. It is used to describe the burgeoning trend of new artists that are not conforming to the dance song/trap song frenzy in the mainstream. When the word hipter is said in regards of Hip Hop acts like The Cool Kids, Mickey Factz, and even Kid Cudi. The term is not exactly something to be happy about but its society's way of categorizing things.

Enter the Sore Losers Brown and Blue. The duo would be pushed into that category but they seem more evolved. They do use the old format of produce and emcee. Brown provides the lyrics and Blue bangs out the beats. The beauty of the Losers is the chemistry is seen through the music. Blue's use of synths and claps along with Brown's vocals, flow, and breath control make every track a joyride. On cuts like "Bizarre Celebrations" Blue speaks through the beat while Brown speak of a wild extravaganza and a night with the opposite sex. Things like this make their upcoming project "Freeloaders" an event to look for. The free "Freeloaders" album will be for free download on their myspace here. Bavu Blakes is Neo in the matrix and if there is one artist that the nation needs to respect coming out of Austin, then he is he. Always creative and lush with the sounds, Bavu brings original flows to the songs he gets on. Bavu shows intelligence in his rhymes and song themes without giving up an ounce of B-Boy flair. Nothing is missing from the Bavu package. He proved at this past year's SXSW in Austin that he was able to deliver the package live on stage as well. There is the obvious ability to pen complete songs such as "Southern Man" and "On The Cool", which he kills with a flow that hits off every congo, seeming to be off rhythm, yet so on rhythm its not even funny. One listen to "On the Cool" and you definitely want to hear Bavu rip it over and over. He never lets down when it comes to the flow. The flow is golden. On my favorite "Play the Role" he hits lyrics of the mind, spitting verse after verse in his clear tone over a track that sounds like the best of 9th Wonder. On the song "Extra Plair", he goes in for the city on a soulful guitar strutting to the snare drums creating a funky vibe, the type of beat that serves Bavu's raspy tenor the best. Today I have the pleasure of introducing viewers of the site to a very special and unique and very necessary artist that goes by the name Saiyan. Repping East Texas to Dallas, Saiyan's debut The Awakening: Book One is a hard lined fastball at your cranium. You have to be ready to listen because if you aren't, you won't hear the message. Chances are that won't stop Saiyan from giving you the food for your mind that it needs. The first song on the album, "Birth Certificate" is a caught somewhere artistically between Ice Cube's Death Certificate rhetoric and the imagery from D.W Griffith's film "Birth of Nation", because it is full of rage and propaganda. He spits new age black nationalism not heard in popular music since the likes of Public Enemy in their heyday. Check out the track below to hear how he kills the shit out of the "Power Rangers" beat as he puts it. He shows a deep perspective and respect for Black women on the song "Dedra" with Carroll Haynes aka June on the chorus. In the song, he depicts the tale of what happens when a man tries to stick up for a girl he calls a friend, but everyone calls a whore. Deep and poignant. By the time you get to the song "Put Em Up" which borrows Lil Jon in the chorus, its pretty evident that Sai, as he's known for short, is about what he says. He name drops the likes of Sean Bell and Fred Hampton throughout. Its only at the end of the cd do I realize, that he has made no reference to bling or getting money if not talking about the struggle. You get the feeling he wouldn't be satisfied with a million dollars. He doesn't want money. He wants justice.
